Leadership in Learning… come learn more at our Summer Socials!

The High School at Liberty begs comparison. Because Liberty is a small, academically focused program, our courses contain individualization, difficult to find in other educational venues. Masterful teachers at Liberty Academy connect with each student and tailor their educational pursuit, allowing students to envision and progress towards their personal potential. All of the truly great leaders in the world had the personal fortitude to study independently at the encouragement of an esteemed mentor. This process has produced the Jeffersons, Washingtons, Ghandis and Churchills of history. These role models, both historical figures and engaging present-day mentors, can inspire a transformational phase in a dedicated student.

High School Focus
Dedicated mentors teaching Honors Courses inspire students to appreciate the need for intellectual exercise, working hard while having a lot of fun along the journey. Our high school program is tailored specifically to this intent. This is not a one-size-fits-all program. Our students will be met at their current educational level and experience learning opportunities orchestrated for personal greatness. Whether a student chooses to stay in our intensive 10th -12th grade scholar program to build upon this foundation, or transfers to another high school, their 9th grade experience will prepare them to choose excellence in their educational pursuits. Students will also have access to a myriad of sports and fine arts options, release time for religious studies, and educational travel opportunities.

9th Grade

Liberty 9th graders will delve into an exploration of the political systems and processes that power our government today. While thoroughly investigating a local case study, students will explore the governmental system, study our country's founding principles, analyze current issues, and investigate the impact of individuals in government. The 9th grade courses involved in this expedition will allow students to earn a year of state-required high school graduation requirements, while engaging students in a enjoyable, rigorous, and motivating course of study. This preparatory year is focused on building the scholar skills, background knowledge, and character necessary to face the rigor of future endeavors, including an intense academic high school experience and paving the way for college opportunities.

10th -12th Grades

History/English: Students in this learning expedition will focus on the ideas that shape our world in this English, history, and humanities seminar open to dedicated 10th -12th graders. This year we will study ancient Egyptian, Middle East and Oriental cultures, reading many of their guiding books and understanding the values and symbols of different cultures.  English readings and writing will focus on the philosophies of leading a great life. Students will learn in an intellectually stimulating discussion setting with other motivated students and will be encouraged to share thoughts and ideas.  Wonderful students are already registered for this class and will provide a solid peer group for students wishing to take thought and study seriously in a fun arena.

Mathematics/Science: Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus, with Physics, Chemistry and Life Science will provide a unique opportunity for an intensive study of honors mathematics and science, fulfilling graduation requirements, motivating students to discover the processes that shape the universe, while laying solid foundation for future studies at the college level. Students will learn in-depth mathematical principles and experience their applications in the sciences. The Saxon mathematics portion of the class will provide an integrated approach to teaching Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry (Pre-calculus). This method of teaching will provide several benefits:

  • Enhanced preparation for standardized testing (ACT and SAT)
  • Increased understanding of the role and application of mathematics in science
  • Opportunities for peer-assisted mentoring and leadership
  • Preparation for Calculus course

Expeditionary Learning
Liberty Academy embraces teaching and learning, student and faculty teamwork, and a demanding and supportive school culture. Literacy is a vital skill constantly integrated into all areas of learning. Developing character and teamwork are not just emphasized, but are actual school structures, accomplished in every day decision-making and involvement in the school culture and community. At Liberty High, much of the academic work is accomplished through Learning Expeditions – semester-long investigations of vital questions and topics that include individual and team projects, field studies, and quality student work, presented and performed for building leadership skills. In addition to an expedition of the mind, students will also engage in many opportunities for original research, fieldwork, and service learning through outdoor leadership and adventure. This year's course of study includes trips to Salt Lake City , Moab , Washington , D.C. , and Mount Timpanogos .

“There is a sense of moral purpose to the design that is beyond academic success. There is a sense of citizenship, something closer to a worldview, a shared sense of our place in the world and the responsibilities that come with that. That is really powerful, and it's something that is largely absent today.” Quote regarding the use of Expeditionary Learning in schools

-Tom Vander Ark , Executive Director, Education, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Leadership Principles (including Covey's 7 Habits)
Liberty sees every student as perfectly capable in an individual way, guiding dedicated students to intellectual greatness. Discovering personal, unique abilities and innate strengths, encouraging the expression of these individual gifts, then linking them to wise decision-making, personal mission exploration, and scholarship goals create an environment for Leadership in Learning.
