MATH

110 ALEKS

Teacher: Mr. Brockbank
Method: Computer-based learning
Grades: 3rd -12th
Time Commitment: ALEKS will be available online for as much time as your child wishes to spend on the program. 3-5 hours of instruction per week is required. Go to www.aleks.com for a free three-hour trial. If your child loves it, and most do, we will sign you up at no cost.

ALEKS (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces) is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know regarding mathematical concepts. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the other math courses she is taking. ALEKS also provides the advantage of one-on-one instruction—24/7—from virtually any Web-based computer.

Our engaging teacher will present one concept at a time, model it extensively, and give numerous examples before requiring independence. The concepts are cumulative and students will continually utilize previously taught techniques in every composition. Shorter assignments given more frequently allow for faster progress towards learning structure and style in their writing. Homonyms, vocabulary words, and some grammar rules will be addressed and the students will complete two book reports, a three-source research paper, and some other writings.

The class divides its study between literature and history. Students will be thoroughly exposed to major ancient civilizations through the study and discussion of that civilization’s literature, religious texts and historical context. The classes’ current focus is on “Symbols” and their significance in the way people have viewed the world for thousands of years. From Ancient Egypt to turn of the century Russia to Transcendentalist America, students will learn to empathize and understand their role as part of the human family, grappling with the same questions of life and death, right and wrong, the questions which have driven men and women to seek order and truth. Students will simultaneously read literature, short essays and stories that correlate with concepts learned in the history portion of the course. Students will be given the opportunity to write their own short story, under the careful and expert guidance of a dynamic and knowledgeable mentor. Click here for topics covered this semester.
